- Death*: Phillip Cyphert Jr died on 5 September 1823 at Unity Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, USA.1,2,3
- Note: He [Cyphert.GED] Shipboard birth is not recorded, but presumed, based on his death at 75 years which placed his birthdate just 20 days prior to the Speedwell's landing in Philadelphia. Married at the home of Christian Henrich, recorded in Goshenhoppen Catholic Records, Vol 3, p. 388. Phillip Seivert listed as constable of Bern county, succeeded in 1792 byJoseph Seyfert. (This Philip had been paying property taxes in Bern Township, and his brother, Joseph, took them over in 1799. Presumably,he had taken over the civic responsibilities several years earlier.) Paid property taxes in Bern Twp, Berks Co. 1762-1798. service in American Revolution. He would have been 34 years old and still single. Penna. Archives, 5th Series, Vol. 5, page 292: Sargeant Geo. Eisenpeis detachment of Berk's Co.militia guarding convention prisoners. Philip Seifert, private, - entry 20 Feb.1782; discharge April 20, 1782 - 60 days of service. The muster rolls from the Pa site says he served with Capt. Jacob Shradle Muster Card: Phillip Seiferd's muster card for the American Revolution. He was in Berks County when he served in the 3rd Battalion under CaptainJacob Shradle. I also found Phillip Seifert years later in 1791(possibly filing for benefits at that time) Here is a few other items on the cards that might be of interest. Thefirst one had a date on it of 1777 to 1778. And there was a Muster fines £0.7.6 http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us and follow to ARIAS. Youwill find and be able to print Phillip Seifert's muster card for servicein the American Revolution. http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/archive.asp?view=ArchiveItems&ArchiveID=13&FID=567285&LID=567384&FL=S&Page=8 You need to understand the make up of the units during that time period. When there is a company under a certain regiment, it has a tendency to be named or referred to by the Captains name, as that is the top rank for the company commander then. I will bet that Sgt Eisenbeis is in this Captains Company or at that in 1782 he might be in Sgt Eisenbeis Company. But to know this for sure, I would need to look at the muster rolls for the companies. As if you look at the Card from the PA archive, it is listing the dates 1777 to 1778. So knowing that he was in the Militia, it is possibly that he is in one company one time and in a now when he is called out again. Plus, it was common 18th century military practice to be transferred from one company to another depending on units’ needs and strengths. A detachment would be a small party out of the main Company. The basic breakdowns of most 18th century Companies are a Captain, 2 Lieutenants and an Ensign for the officer staff (Now some had more then this also). Then for enlistment men each company is normal made up of about 100 men. This would include 2 sergeants, 4 corporals and a drummer plus the rest as privates. Philip Cyphert had remained on his father's farm until his father'sdeath, but apparantly gave up all citizenship duties at that time. In1799 he moved to Westmoreland County, Unity Township, with 7 children, stopping in ?? Creek, Butler County enroute. He moved with a group ofCatholic families who built the church at Crates. Philip Cyphert wasamong 75 subscribers to a log church at Sportsman's Hall at Latrobe, PA,1799. 1790 Census lists Philip living with 3 males under sixteen and 2 females.Although Philip is elsewhere listed as having 10 children, it appearsthat this may refer to 10 surviving children. 1800 Census lists Philip Syphert at Westmoreland County 1810 Census listsPhil Syphert at Westmoreland County, living with Barbari, Mary Magdelen,Roseanna, John, and one other male under 10 years. 1820 Census lists Phil Syphert at Westmoreland County with Rosanna, Mary Magdelene, Barbari, John, Philip and one other male under 10. - Immigration*: He immigrated on 25 September 1749 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.6,7
- Death*: Phillip Seifert died on 2 November 1784 at Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA.1,2,3
- Note: He [Cyphert.GED] Philip Cyphert(1) arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on September 25,1749 aboard the Speedwell. The vessel, captained by James Creagh, saledfrom the port of Rotterdam. The Speedwell's 240 passengers(2) were fromWurttenbergh (a region in Germany), Alsace (a German province at thattime, although now a part of France), and Hanau (a town near Frankfurt,Germany), and Philip is said to have sailed the Rhine to Rotterdam from Alscase (Alsace) County (5).Phillip settled on 75 acres in Berks County, PA and was Roman Catholic(6). Property deeded to Philip Seifert of Bern Twp in 1790, record indicateshe had three children who divided the estate: Philip, Mary ElizabethGrate and Joseph (7). ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1.The name has been recorded variously as Seifert, Sauvert, Syft,Cypher, Cyphert, and even Corbett. It is assumed that Philip spoke littleor no English, and there is no reason to believe he was literate inany language. He signed the log of the passenger ship whihc brought himto America with an 'x'. 2. _The Genealogical and Personal History of Allegheny Valley_ (Vol I,Page 125, published by Lewis Historical Publication Company, 1913) lists'immigrant', Philip Cyphert, as having 10 children. It is otherwiseunclear whether Philip J. was born before or after his father immigrated, since he is apparently not listed on the passenger lists of theSpeedwell. That record merely provides a passenger list of 240 'souls'including 81 males (of whom Philip Cyphert is one) along with 19 wives, single females and children. (Allan H. Cyphert) 3. According to a letter from the Philadelphia Archdiocesan HistoricalResearch Center to Allan H. Cyphert, church records were not keptprior to 1758. However, the Westmoreland Republican Paper of 9/12/1823reported the death of Philip Syft on Friday, Sept 5, 1823 'at age 75years.' He 'left an aged widow and 10 children.' It is possible that he was born veryshortly after his father's immigration to the U.S. on September 25, andthat he was very close to, but had not actually reached, his 75thbirthday at the time of his death on September 5th. It is quitepossible, however, that his mother was one of the unnamed wives aboard the Speedwell, and that he was bornduring the journey to America. 4. While there are other identified Cypherts living nearby, HenryCyphert's research shows that Philip was father to only three children. In the absence of early birth and death records, it is possible thatother infants were born but did not survive childhood. 5. _Genealogical and Personal History of the Allegheny Valley, PA_ Vol1, p. 275, prepared under the supervision of John E. - LandBuy*: He bought property at Lyndon, State College, Centre County, Pennsylvania, USA, on between 1777 and 1778 described as 100 acres near State College.
- Note*: He BIOGRAPHY: William King was buried in the Cedar Creek Cemetary which is located on a knoll less than one mile south from William's farm. There was a dispute on the location of the new church so a cemetary was all that was placed there. The exact location is about 100 yards south of Pennslvania state road #45 about 500 yards east of the intersection of this road with the local access road to Lindon Hall a stone house is on the north side. The 1874 history of the King family says that because his parents died when he was young he was brought up by an uncle who would not allow him to speak dutch and thus the mother language was lost. William King's family attended Old Drawyer's Church which was founded by his grandfather Francis King and his wifes grandfather Hans along with two others. William King was a man of wealth who owned slaves. All three early histories of the King family agree on William Kings military service during the Revolutionary War. William King moved to Penns Valley about four miles west of Potters Fort, Centre County Penn. about the times of the Indian War. He bought land and was among the very first white settlers there. He was one of the settlers who built Potters Fort, and for a time had to fight against the Indians, being one week at home working and the next off fighting or guarding the settlement. He was also one of the first jurors to hold court at Bellefonte, Pa. upon the formation of Centre County into a seperate county.
