Subject: Andreas Ringle & Mathias Ringle I
Posted by: Andy Ringle
Message: Dear Jerri,
Thanks for your note. We are more closely related than just through Andreas, since we're also both descendents of Mathias I. I guess you have the history on him? Wagon maker, served in the PA militia, was at Valley Forge with Washington? He's buried in Westmoreland County PA, about an hour east of Pittsburgh, at St. James German Reformed (Lutheran) Church. I visited the grave several times when I lived in Pittsburgh. I understand his house also still stands; however, I didn't get there before I moved.
My line of descent is Andreas, Mathias I (the dates on his gravestone read 1742-1811), Mathias II (1775?), George (1803), Simon Andrew (1830), Kenneth Bruce (1866), Kenneth Duval, and then myself. Since both my brother and I have had only girls (as did my father's one male cousin), the Ringle name will also die out for Simon Andrew's branch with our generation.
I was interested in what you had to say about Ringles and heart disease: my Ringle grandfather and his brother and sister all died of heart attacks (my grandfather at 41), as did my father (at 62). This trait may go back further than I realized.
How long did your branch stay in PA, and where did they go from there?
Good luck on your search, and let's stay in touch.
With all best wishes,
Andy Ringle.
- Note*: He Mathias enlisted as Ensign in the Continental Army and served underGeorge Washington in the winter at Valley Forge and in the marchacross the Deleware. Then he bought land in Westmoreland Co, PA.Again enlisting as a Private in the Revolutionary War, he served untilthe end of the war.
Mathias built a large brick home in 1797, located just opposite the'Way Station' at McDowell's Crossroads, in Madison, PA? The buildingdates back to about 1810. (In the story caption under a pencil sketchof the house, his name is spelled 'Mathias Reingle) Apparently, thishouse has been remodeled into an apartment complex. He was ablacksmith and wagon maker.
Stone at Yockey meetinghouse (St. James Church Cemetery) reads:ENSIGN 1st BTN. NORTHAMPTON CO. MILITIA REVOLUTIONARY WAR - WAGONMAKER WITH GENERAL WASHINGTON AT VALLEY FORGE 1776-1783.
The children except for Eve and Stophel, who both died young, eithersettled in western PA, northwestern OH and northeastern OH.
The 1790 census lista Mathias family as 3 males over 16 yrs, 3 malesunder 16 yrs, and 5 females in household.
Born in Old Philadelphia, of German extraction.
DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, Part III, (1990) page 2472lists Mathias as being born in Germany.
