- Note*: He From: Tom Blackler of Marblehead, 31-8-02. Notes for CAPTAIN WILLIAM BLACKLER: Executive bodies were formed by colonial towns and legislatures to direct the struggle against British rule. as the conflict between the colonies and Great Britain deepened, many colonial towns created local Committees of Correspondence, Committees of Inspection and Committees of Safety. The Committees of Inspection were charged with the task of checking and reporting violations of the boycott of British trade initiated by the Continental Congress. Such a committee was formed in Marblehead composed of fifteen patriotic citizens whose zeal for the cause of their country was a sufficient guarantee that the duty would be faithfully performed, namely: Samuel Hooper, Captain John Glover, Captain Israel Foster, Captain John Prince, Captain Thomas Pedrick, Captain John Russell, Captain James Mudford, Captain William Courtis, Mr. Nicholas Broughton, CAPTAIN WILLIAM BLACKLER, Thomas Grant III, Edward Wild, Samuel Russell Trevett, John Grush, and Mr. Joel Smith. The Loyalists were opposed to the activities of this Committee. Colonel John Glover's (Essex County) Regiment; Muster Roll dated August 1, 1775; Enlisted April 24, 1775; Service 3 mos. 15 days; Reported recommended to be commissioned June 22, 1775; also company return dated Cambridge, Oct. 9, 1775. 19 May to December 1775, Captain of Glover's Massachusetts Regiment. Glover's favorite company in the regiment was the one commanded by his own son, John Jr. A youth of twenty, John was married to Fanny Lee, sister of William R. Lee, and served in his father's regiment in 1775 and 1776. But Colonel Glover felt almost as close to other companies in the regiment, for they were officered by old friends: fellow Whigs like William Courtis and WILLIAM BLACKLER who had served with him on the Marblehead committee of inspection. On August 29, 1776, WILLIAM BLACKLER was Captain of Company Two of the 21st Regiment of Foot of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, commanded by Colonel John Glover. This regiment, composed almost entirely of men from Marblehead, was especially effective in the retreat from Long Island. On the night of December 25, 1776, George Washington decided to surprise the British troops in trenton, New Jersey, by crossing the Delaware River and attacking the Hessian advance posts. Boats being in readiness, the troops began to cross about sunset. The weather was cold; the wind was high, and the river full of floating ice. Colonel John Glover and his amphibious regiment of Marblehead fishermen was in the advance and CAPTAIN WILLIAM BLACKLER, of Marblehead, had command of the boat in which Washington was rowed across. Having served on several patriot committees with Glover, the thirty-six year old mariner had both the background and training to be entrusted with so important a task. The Marblehead regiment was the same that had navigated the army across the source in its retreat from Brooklyn on Long Island to New York. They were men accustomed to battle with the elements; yet with all their skill and experience the crossing was difficult and perilous. CAPTAIN WILLIAM BLACKLER was a captain in Glover's regiment, and it was his proudest boast through life that he was in command of the boat in which General Washington crossed the Delaware River on the night before the Battle of Trenton. Blackler's boast was borne out by John Roads Russell, another Marbleheader and a private in Glover's regiment, who claimed he rowed the boat with the general and captain aboard. The image most Americans carry of Washington crossing the Delaware is false. It is based upon the familiar painting by Emanuel Leutze, a German-born artist who lived in America but spent more than two decades in the land of his birth. Using the Rhine to portray the Delaware, Leutze took more artistic liberties than usual and his picture is filled with inaccuracies. Instead of the Durham boats which were actually used, Leutze painted craft that looked like ship long-boats. The dozen men crowded into the small boat in the foreground of his picture most certainly would have swamped a craft of that size. If the boat had remained afloat its heavy draft would have prevented the men aboard from approaching within twenty feet of the shore. Nor would a man of Washington's innate good sense have invited disaster by standing with one foot on the gunwale while crossing an ice-filled river on a dark night. 1776-77 Captain in the Massachusetts Militia. He was lamed for life at Bemis Heights. War heroes like John Glover and WILLIAM BLACKLER became selectmen; privateers brought back experience and drive to reestablish the fisheries. On the 5th of July, 1786, a meeting of the proprietors of St. Michael's Church was called by Isaac Mansfield, a Justice of the Peace, and the Rev. Thomas Fitch was settled as Rector. During his Rectorship he was sustained in his labors by the zealous assistance of several of the most distinguished citizens of the town. The honored list includes Colonel William R. Lee, Colonel Marston Watson, Captain Joshua Orne, CAPTAIN WILLIAM BLACKLER, and the Honorable Samuel Sewall. These men, by serving as Vestrymen and active laymen of the Parish, removed in a great degree the prejudice felt by the townspeople against the Church because of the Tory sentiments of its former Rector. Pearl Street is perpendicular to Washington Street, west. Number 7 is one of the few brick houses in Marblehead. This one belonged to CAPTAIN WILLIAM BLACKLER who figured prominently in Glover's Regiment at the Delaware crossing. The CAPTAIN had formerly owned Number 44 Washington Street. This house at Number 7 has a fine courtyard with the main entrance, and the house itself stands sideways to the street. It is probably the only house in Marblehead that can boast a Samuel McIntire-designed interior, with all the wonderful scrolls, baskets, and so forth, that were carved out of wood by that superb, noted craftsman.
