At the cal of his country he served four years in the Civil War as a memberof the 105th Regt. Pa. Vols. Mr. Cyphert never married. He is survived by three brothers, Charles, of Kingsville; John, of Los Angeles, Cal. andTheo. O'Connell, Colly, Wash., and one sister, Mrs. J.H. Crate, of Brookville. Two borthers, Henry and Michael, preceded him in death. The funeral was held from the residence of his sister in Brookville last Saturday and interment took place in the Brookville cemetery. The following relatives from this county attended the obsequies: Charles, J.A., D. O., A. J. and James F. Cyphert and H. C. Aaron, all of Kingsville, and R. H. and J. W. Cyphert, of Clarion.

The deceased was one of a family of nine children of Solomon and Nacy Kerr Cyphert and was born near Kingsville, March 1842, where he resided until September, 1861, when he and a neighbor boy, John Newhouse, of Howe, Jeff. Co., Pa., enlisted in Co. F, 63d Pa. Inf. taken out by the late Maj. B. J. Reid of Clarion, and served three years in the Army of the Potomac in Heintzeman's Brigade, Hancock's Corps. He was in every engagement the 63d was in until the expiration of his enlistment in October 1864. He was wounded at the Winderness and was speciallycommended for his bravery by General Hancock at Chancellorsville, and voted a medal by Congress for his services at that time. After he returned from thearmy he stayed with his mother at Kingsville until 1867, when he went west and spent some fifteen years in the mining camps of Colorado, Nevada and California. After having accumulated a competence he took up hisresidence at Los Angeles and lived a retired life. Of his ancestors there wereeight brothers on his father's side at the battle of Brandywine. On hismaternal side his great-grandfather, Matthew Hasey, was one of the soldiers whocame here with Lafayette. The family consisted of Hon. Henry Cypert, Kingsville; James K. Cyphert, who died at Brookville a few years ago and who served three years in Co. C 105th Regt.. Pa. Vol; Barbara, deceased wife of John Crate of Brookville; George, who served three years with the 16th Pa. Res. and was shot through the hips; Daniel O., a prosperousfarmer of the state of Washington; Michael J. deceased of Washington; Bonnie, who died in infancy, and Charles G., of Kingsville. The deceased was a man of unassuming manner and had many friends. He was never married.

With the AmericanExpeditionary Forces from September 20, 1918 to June 22, 1919 and washonorably discharged on July 3, 1919. Enjoyed hunting with his brothers-in-law, Francis White and GuthrieCarrier. Belonged to both a chess and a checker club. Lived in Aliquippa where he was a foreman for J& L steel mill for 32years, returning to Brookville in 1976. Went to a nursing home in 1988, lost both legs due to poor circulation in1989 and 1990. Alert until the end, however, playing checkers regularlywith friend, Ken Yates, and looked forward to reaching his 100th birthday. Buried at Clarion Cemeter, taps plaiyed at his funural by Miss HeatherGilford, a student at Brookville Area High School, the reverend PhilConklin officiating Sources: letter, R.M.
